If you review the bidding on this extreme example you'll find that
almost all the high bids come from two individuals (and most of the
other bidders are people with no eBay history, for that matter).

The sensible bids stop at either $120 or $165. Everything beyond that is
attributable to bidding frenzy (or even less charitable interpretations).
