Pål, The square format provides valuable versatility. It would be a "waste" only if it offered little or nothing in return for using more film than 645.
In practice, the versatility of 6x6 offers far greater value than the tiny cost of what you say it "wastes". I regard it as an *investment* with an especially good pay-off, and I feel sure that most 6x6 users would agree it's worth paying for. Definitely *not* a waste!
