e.g.
PS won't recognise the USB printer if the printer wasn't on when PS was
open. BTW, according to USB standards, it should. I usually leave the
printer off unless I am going to print something in color (have a laser
printer for B&W) to save ink.

BTW, Epson printers clog up far faster if they are left on without
printing. the heads are exposed and the ink dries out. when they are turned
off, the heads are capped. i suspect that many other inkjet printers run
this way too, although the replaceable heads in HPs appear not to be parked
with a cap on them.
