It's not a dumb question and I hope this isn't a dumb answer. I always use a lens hood. SMC is great, but using a lens hood also helps to reduce lens flare. It also keeps rain off the front element and protects the front of the lens from incidental contact with hard elements, unless, of course, you are using a collapsible rubber hood.
