All the usual reasons. Faster maneuvering, faster setup time when I go from a shorter lens to 1000mm, one less thing to carry, especially when I'm mainly going from point A to point B and bring a camera along for opportunity shots. On the IS issue, why would I carry a tripod if I don't need one?
