I don't think the MZ-S was intended as a successor to
the MZ-3/5n.

The new *ist replaces a good chunk of the MZ/ZX bottom
end line-up, and has more features than the MZ-3/5n
(except for the k-mount lens issue). If you look at
the detailed manual for the *ist (on the Pentax USA
webpage), it has practically most of the features of
the MZ-S (even high-speed flash synch) with a much
better AF system.

I would expect an updated version of the MZ-S and or a
film SLR similar to the *ist-D. As I recall there's
supposed to be two more film SLR's in the *ist family,
with one below and one abouve the *ist (or maybe two
more above?) I doubt the price of the MZ-S would come
down much due to the high material (magnesium) &
manufacturing costs (hand painted).

With this new *ist-D, who knows where it will leave
the film-based Pentax SLR's?
