Or the alternative would be to use off the film (sensor) metering, this way you could still use stuff like mirror lock up.

Easier to offer a firmware upgrade to allow stopdown metering or even
instantaneous stopdown metering in Av mode a'la the FUJI ST605(?), of the late

For those of you who don't remember Fuji had an offering that featured
aperture preferred automation with any screw mount lens. After the shutter
release was tripped the camera would first stop down the lens to shooting
aperture, calculate the exposure then fire the shutter. It was tempting but
I didn't have a raft of screw mount lenses when I heard about it, and I
decided to go with a bayonet mount system and settled on the K mount.

The Fuji must have been an electro-mechanical marvel, or nightmare, take your
pick I suppose. Since much of that sequencing is done with software these days,
It wouldn't be much of a trick to create a function to get the *ist or *ist-D to
behave that way with K/M lenses. They could charge extra for it.

Modifying mechanical lenses? That takes design talent, parts manufacture and skill,
all of which seem to be in short supply.

You would think Pentax would see a small revenue maker by offering a service
to modify K/M lenses for use on the *ist and the D.
