John, thank for the explanation.
What you are describing is what I call Program Shift (I come from a simpler
era).
The green button on the ist D will reset the camera to a "correctly metered
exposure".
Using one of the custom functions, you can make it go back to the program
line, or keep either shutter or aperture set at its current setting, and
have the other setting adjusted by the camera.
