Yes, but at the start CDs offered better quality than longplays. In contrast
digital photography was quality-wise a crap compared to film and it needed
many years to achieve quality that is possible with 35mm slide film. Now
that this quality leap happened with introduction of 6MPix DSLRs and P&S
digi cameras produced very good quality output for postcard prints (as most
people did them for family and the likes photos), more and more people will
go digital - for quality and/or for convenience.
