I can't speak for the 555, but the Optio S has 2 macro modes, one I guess you would call "medium" and the other "real close". Quality with the "S" in both modes is excellent. I shot an insect of about 1 1/2 - 2 inches and filled the frame with room to spare. DOF, needless to say, is very shallow.
