How comfortable would you feel in giving me an estimate on the time and costs necessary to produce a program if I only gave you a vague idea of what I wanted from it and nowhere near the detailed specs you should need in order to create a reliable estimate? Perhaps, you'd even think that I was a little stupid to ask in that way. That's pretty much what you were asking. Any estimate an honest repairer could give you would have to be too broad to be meaningful to your friend.
