It's a very narrow niche when 283 images would be too few,
but 384 would be enough ...
 
If you're going to burden the camera processor with bit-
twiddling code, far better would be to implement compressed
TIFF; this could easily yield far better than a 30% increase,
and would work for those 18MB TIFFs as well as the 13MB PEFs.
It would also still work with 14-bit or 16-bit pixel depths,
which are already showing up in high-end sensors - I have to
believe that Pentax will get there eventually.
