my WinXP machine returns from suspend in about the same amount of time. the only annoying thing about the machine that i use often enough to care is that my Firewire connection is only 4 pins and any Firewire hard drives i attach need an external power supply. i use an external 2.5" Firewire drive for my image backups for the machine. self-powered Firewire (6-pins) would have been what i would have prefered. only one cable then. i have to use a second cable to connect from my USB port to the power connector on the drive. i have since bought a USB 2.0 external 2.5" hard drive and that uses only one cable, but it's job is to move files around between computers and act as temporary storage.
