Any suggestions that would mimic a soft focus lens reasonably well?
Diffusers are not at all the same type of animal.

Zeiss softar filters are supposed to be good but very expensive. With the
*ist-D I think I would just use gaussian blur in PS, duplicate the
background layer first, then apply, then use the erase tool carefully on the
eyes, eyebrows and mouth. If the eyes are sharp the soft focus looks less
artificial. finally bring the opacity on the blurred level down to 80-85%,
again makes it look less artificial.
