I believe it's the extra Nikon contacts which are placed farther apart. That's why it is safe to use Nikon flash on Pentax bodies w/o firing the circuit.

Nope. The two rearmost contacts of the Nikon flash connection are spaced
farther apart. (Or is it the Pentax ones that are farther apart? I don't
have both handy at the moment but I have done a direct comparison in the
past and they *are* different.)
