I can handhold my digi at 1/8 or 1/4 of a second. :-)
The trick is that you need to shoot as fast as possible. Chances are at least one of them will turn out sharp, or at least sharp enough. My Coolpix 990 even has a setting to make this easier. It's called Best Shot Selector. You hold down the shutter, and it shoots as fast as it can until you let up. When you let up, it picks the largest file of the batch, and saves that one. (the larger file has more detail, hence sharper) I haven't yet tried this with an SLR, and it may not work with an SLR due to the mirror movement. However, with a dSLR, it may be worth trying. :-) Of course, it always helps to prop yourself against something solid when you shoot like this.
