Good read - and true, like all Stella´s stories. But speed is not everything. Without proper coatings flare is even bigger problem. Many pre-war superspeed lenses had a minimum aperture of something like f:8 because flare made them unusable beyond that - seems like the diaphragm reflects so much light back that multicoating makes a lot of difference.
