This seems very odd to me. What could be proprietary in a light metering
circuit that has a 5-LED display? I can't imagine what could be in it
besides a few op-amps or comparators.

I expect a minimum of cleverness would be required. What *would* be
required would be a schematic diagram. The MX service manual shows basic
wiring but not an actual schematic.
