Actually, Mac OS *is* the culprit.  It doesn't support FAT correctly.
(I'm including the file browser as part of the software in Mac OS)

The Finder handles this situation correctly: select any file on the FAT volume and use the Get Info command, the Created date is simply marked as '-'.


However, when you're looking at a list view and want to see Created and Modified dates, It's exactly the opposite way around from what you state. The Finder calls the UNIX routines which do not handle the lack of a creation date correctly ... They just report whatever happens to be in the appropriate number of bytes at the appropriate offset and return that.

Aside from that, it's stupid to have a Created date be an "optional" field.
