Mine seem to be:
1. Never have a camera with me when I see something I want to photograph. 2. Never see anything I want to photograph when I have a camera with me. 3. In the rare event 1 & 2 do not apply, traffic has to be so heavy I can not stop. 4. Leave a camera in the truck so the seals will melt.
I do not think these rules are self-imposed, but rather that the gods hate me.
