Amen to that.  
In my experience I'd say that the even machinery from the fifties had higher 
ultimate limits than most of the drivers of those machines. Same holds true 
today, even more so.

I had a 66 Shelby GT350, a great ballsy car that took some skill to drive. My 
last SHO did most of the things the Shelby did with ridiculous ease and what 
seems like less skill.

The difference between then and now is that modern machinery is generally much 
better than the pilot.  Once someone in, say, a VW Golf gets into a sticky 
situation (which they even more often didn't see developing) generally they are 
so far outside their own performance envelope the result is disastrous.  Older 
vehicles would give you earlier warning at a lower speed. You then had a 
choice.......
