For the most part, I was.  Sure, I had my moments of vehicular
stupidity, but they were moments, they weren't the entirety of my
approach to driving.

Ditto. My parents gave me a car when I was 16 and I felt I had to prove I was 
a responsible and serious driver, or they might take the car away. And I 
hated riding the bus to high school (I was the last stop).

It's all a matter of motivation, I guess. Or maybe innate stupidity or common 
sense.
