All of those definitions seem to suggest taking a variety of pieces to form a final image that doesn't necessarily represent any one of its parts. However, if one starts with a picture of a car, adds a sky, a road, flops the car, and retouches the reflections in the sheetmetal, the result is still a picture of a car. The photographers I know call the process compositing and the result a photograph, not a collage.

It would seem that photographers are not English majors for the most part.
