Not essential, but with flash you can stop right down and get the best
DOF available from the lens, and obviously use a higher shutter speed
accordingly.

The problem with close flash like a ringflash is that it illuminates just
the small area being photographed, and it usually looks like night in the
background. This can be balanced somewhat with a slave flash on the
background, especially if in studio conditions.

I dare say it doesn't do the bugs any good.
