something else to consider is that heat haze has much more effect than you would guess from what you can see through the viewfinder. i figure that the working range of my setup of a 400/2.8 with the 1.7X extender is really only up to about 500ft. much more than that on a warm day and air currents become too much for good sharpness. i prefer to work at no more than 200 ft if i can help it. for small bird work, i prefer 30-40ft.
Thanks for this. That shot of the radar tower was probably at a distance of a mile, perhaps even a bit more, and I was shooting just about straight down the airport's main runway.
