i'm one of the people who shoot f11 under those conditions. i can look at the histogram if i think the shot is improperly exposed and correct if need be. every time i have had to correct exposure, it's not because of the lens or the camera, it's because i wasn't paying attention and not overriding the camera.

Fortunately, with modern metering cells this is a scenario that almost never happens - who does take f/11 shots in available light at 3 EV? At such lower light levels most people shoot wider open...
