True. But on the other hand after getting my La Crosse charger I tested and
reconditioned my older batteries.  This including 2 1/2 semi retired sets
of six year old Radio Shack 1200mah batteries.  After reconditioning one
set was up to minimum 1050mha and another to 950mha.  The cells increased
capacity with reconditioning by 30% to 50%.  These antiques are kept in the
fridge and are useful for non critical functions.  A couple of two year old
sets also increased in capacity by 10-20% when reconditioned.  Newer sets
did not improve.

So it seems fully discharging / reconditioning occasionally, will help
older NiMH cells.
