Don't be so sure about that, Jack.  I've personally known two situations
where someone was fired based only on an anonymous phone call, and I know
that the employee was not asked a single question or given an opportunity
to explain her side of the story.

It really depends on the alleged offence and how both society and the emplyer feels about it. My employer considers being charged with an offence sufficient grounds for dismissal, and in some circumstances, considers being investigated sufficient grounds for dismissal.
