that depends on the type of external meter you use. When I go skiing at the end of this month I will probably take an incident meter and shoot Tri-X through a medium yellow filter. In this case I will set the ISO on the meter differently to compensate for the filter, but I will not compensate for the snow because I'm not taking a reflected reading.
