Hi everybody!

I was wondering if anybody has had any experience in sealing lens
barrel against water and/or dust with any type of tape/sealant.
The area of the barrel that would need to be sealed
is away from the junction between rotating elements. Does this sound too crazy?

I am considering purchasing a lens that might have problems like this.
Due to previous attachment of something unknown to the lens (and related barrel modifications) the barrel might not be sealed completely against moisture/dust.
This is not the actual lens but the one I am considering has
a similar sort of "modification". The plate might not have a perfect seal:

Any thoughts?

Because of focusing and zooming movement, you'd really need a lens like a newer Canon L series, which is designed as a sealed lens (Nikon also has some weathersealed lenses IIRC). The only way You could get away with sealing a lens otherwise would be an ultra-wide andgle sealed up with the focus set hyperfocal.
