Turn off fast printing if it's on. If you're using glossy paper, don't use the "best photo" setting. Drop it to "Photo RPM" if it's an option.
It turns out that it can be done after all. Aparently it isn't enough to change the settings and press OK; it has to be saved as a custom setting. It works (almost). The banding is almost gone and only be spotted by carefully scrutinizing the image. I'm on the right track. Thanks!
