Here's another suggestion: Since the light meter in the camera will be affected by the direction, why not hold it up in front of the camera, rotate the filter and note the max. and min. EV. Then reverse the filter and repeat. The filter direction that gives the least difference between max. and min. EV should be the right way, shouldn't it?
