I think it was more like a rather short time. He uses Canon digital now
if I'm not mistaken.

Even for the candids?
In doing fifteen years of high end lab work, I saw very, very few
photographers do the candids on MF. Mostly it was MF for the groups,
bride and groom portraits and some key church images, with the
candids all on 35mm.
Tom VanVeen used a Pentax 645 for a very long time and most of his
shots could be considered "candids"
