Here's how I explained jpeg/RAW to some fairly non-technical folks. If pictures were brownies, a raw file would be like a grocery sack containing a brownie mix, eggs, water and oil. (or whatever else the mix requires) Within some limits, you can vary the ingredients and the baking time to make the brownies just the way you like them. jpeg file are more like coming home from the bakery with a box of brownies. May have tried JPGs the first or two times around, but not long after that. I had also shot JPGs previously with a digital P&S and was unhappy with the over and underexposed areas. Too MUCH like slide film. RAW gives me options to fix things up. Good analogy. I agree. Already cooked.
