Good challenge. As I noted in an earlier message, check the DP Review and Imaging Resource message boards: There isn't even a whisper of discontent about this issue. Heck, I invite the fanatics on this issue, if they're so convinced they're right, to try to stir up some discontent in these places. You may deride the users of these fora as being just the ignorant masses, but that's precisely the point - they outnumber "us" by several thousand to one. And if they're aware of backwards compatibility at all, they're absolutely delighted with "green button" metering.
