In much the same way that demand for an aperture cam follower fell off 
to the point where it wasn't economically feasable.

Canon FL/FD users didn't get a new and improved mount. They got told 
that they had to buy an entire new camera/lens system when their present 
camera bodies wore out, whether or not the lenses they were using were 
still up to the task.
As you said yourself, lenses last practically forever, and support for 
them is of utmost importance.

John, it's about support.
You said it yourself.

If you don't believe that support is important to an entire family of 
lenses that were in production for 25 or so years and probably number in 
the 10s of millions, how can you claim it is important for a subset of 
lenses that was produced for 5 years, without people thinking you are a 
hypocrite.
