That business model would be a complete disaster in the photographic  
industry.  Most people are only going to use their DSLR with the kit  
lens(es), which are often third-party anyway.

Straying off-topic, the Xbox is indeed an excellent example of how to  
lose money.  On a purely financial basis, the whole project was a  
complete disaster.
