I can't offer a specific primer, but I'm sure it has to do with the fact
that water is so important to the formation and continuance of life on
this planet, water has some unusual properties we don't completely
understand, and water makes up so much of the biosphere and its
denizens.  So anything we learn about water and how it works helps us
understand more about the biology and chemistry of life, not to mention
its action as the "Universal Solvent" with regards to erosion and other
non-biological processes.
