IMO the 18-55 is very nice little lens... very affordable abd very good (for its price). Of course you'll get little distortion at wide angle and low speed (f/5.6) at 55mm but it still is very nice and very convenient.
I tends to think (based on other reports and price... never tried it) that I'd go 18-55 -> 16-50/2.8 instead of 16-45. If I have to pay huge amount of money (yes for me it is huge) than I'd go dtraight to the f/2.8. Just my 2 cents but again ... I DIDN'T try the 16-45.
