The small (4" x 5") Graphire usually runs around US$ 100 retail, over the Internet. The same size Intuos2 runs about US$ 200. Prices go up with size, of course, with the biggest one, around 11" x 14" I think, is up around US$ 500, I believe. You need to realize that the measurement that Wacom gives is for the "active area" on the pad, not the entire pad. So, the pad for my 4" x 5" Intuos2 is actually something like 7" x 9" overall size.
