I am not Dan, but I have to agree with him.
I believe he is stressing that we restrain ourselves and exercise the "sense
of proportion", not particularly objecting to OT itself
PDML being what it is, a thread could very easily turn into completely
something else.  I admit I am guilty too in participating in some OT
threads, however, as long as we do not "push" it too much, blowing it out to
too hot a debate or even argument, occasional OT make people laugh and add
some character to this list.
But as he says, if it goes too far too long, leading to flame war, pitting
against each other, it serves no purpose.  There have been too many of those
lately.  Some of the recent OT's just went too long perhaps.  Usualy, they
peak and subsides naturally in a reasonable time.
I for one learned a lot though, about English usage, buffalo, American
psyche on flag, guns, health care and all other countless OTs :-).
