Smith was among the early troops who landed on Iwo Jima, and Life
published a story called Marines Win Bloody, Barren Sands of Iwo Jima,
which used his pictures. He returned a few days/weeks after the
invasion and had another story in Life about it. 

I don't think he was at the flag-raising though (either of them) -
I've never seen it mentioned anywhere.
