PNG was mentioned recently by someone who considered it a superior  
format for image encoding compared to JPEG.

As mentioned in this article, it is a format suitable for image data  
that you would otherwise have used GIF format to encode, not  
photographic continuous tone data which is what JPEG was designed  
for. PNG has capabilities for transparency and other features that  
are of use to Web designers.
