I reported a few days ago that my DA* 16-50 F2.8 will not autofocus to
infinity at 16 mm on my K20D. It works just fine if I zoom to 50 mm. The
lens works just fine also on my K10D.

Since I leave for Italy tomorrow, Calumet kindly sent me a new K20D
overnight. So I did the initial set up, put on the DA* 16-50, set it to
16 mm, found a suitable distant subject and...

nothing has changed. It still won't focus beyond about 2 m when the lens
is zoomed to 16 mm.

Well, a little has changed. It will now focus to infinity sometimes at
16 mm, but not consistently. I have found, though, that if I set the
lens to 18 mm it autofocuses to infinity just fine. Back to 16 mm and it
won't.

So I guess that means that my DA* 16-50 is defective rather than the
K20D. Since my DA* 50-135 arrived with a loose lens element rattling
around inside, that means that my first two DA* lenses were both
defective. Good show, Pentax.

So now I have to decide whether to take the DA* lenses and chance losing
shots taken with the 16-50, or leave the zooms at home and take the
three DA limiteds. But I haven't tried those yet on the K20D.

Incidentally, I emailed Pentax a few days ago to inquire about this and
so far have had no response.

Joe
