Update: I tried to see if I could correct the problem with the K20D's focus adjustment. At 16 and 20 mm, an adjustment of -9 gives the best focus, and improves focus quite a bit. But at 35 mm. it needs -10 for best sharpness (and I cannot tell if -11 might be even better since there is no adjustment beyond 10). As I feared, there is no single focus adjustment for zoom lenses.
So when we return from Italy I guess the DA* 16-50 goes to Pentax. Trouble is, they will probably want the K20D too to align them to each other.
