Yes, I was about to suggest that. The 2x converter is commonly available on ebay at well under $100. You'll lose a couple of stops but, if you're using the lens well stopped down to maximize depth of field, that may not matter.
I've got this exact combination fitted to my DS - works well. Might be worth a try until you decide something more expensive is needed.
