I often use a flash unit with a hot-shoe remote cord, flash held in my hand, or fired via a slave (I use a little Nikon SB-30 that Adam Maas recommended as a trigger flash, it works a treat for this kind of thing). The SB-30 has an IR shield for the tube so that it doesn't add to the exposure at all.
