I have this lens and use it primarily on a tripod. but then I even use my 20mm on a tripod. It can be used hand held: I have used it to take shots of water skiers from the boat. Obviously you need a fast shutter speed and so on, but it is not so large to preclude that. The tripod mount detaches easily to allow using the lens hand held.
