It's a good idea, though.
Oh I was very eager about it - I love the idea and have enjoyed a few I found around the country...

They've done that quite successfully in Paris, and
of course there are 'rail trails' in most countries nowadays outside the
cities.

In London there are many, many miles of canal which are very pleasany
greenways to walk, and often a surprisingly quick way of getting around. We
also have a number of greenways built on top of enormous Victorian sewage
pipes, still in operation, which are straight pedestrian / cycling tracks
right into the heart of London.

It's all good stuff, but takes time to mature.

Unlike ours - The cement pathway in places is very bandly designed... I already saw a kid take a spill because of it ... fingers of concrete reach into the dirt/plant area along the edges - to mimic ties, supposedly... but very prone to cause ankle turning spills especially when the path is crowded.

The newer buildings around are ugly... and there are lounge chairs built in along the path... the greenery is helter-skelter ...
You might be able to figure out I was pretty disappointed :-)

Charles...
google New York CIty High Line

This was NY's attempt to do what has been done elsewhere in the country more nicely, I think...

turning unused rail tracks into walking trails... IMHO they really botched it...
