Being a biologist by training I would have to say that the rodent in question is a prairie dog of some variety.
hmmmm, the link came from Australia so perhaps it is another plan by the Aussies to introduce a non-native species to eradicate a previously introduced non-native species that (as usual) ran out of control after it was introduced to eradicate a previously introduced non-native species.....
